Children are like flowers; how you water a flower will determine how well it will grow. I believe that the best time to start teaching a child something is right from when the child has started identifying objects, so you start with the things closer to them.
These things are:
1. Teach them how to lead in prayer, starting with morning devotional. Even if the person cannot talk well, give him or her the opportunity to learn as they learn how to talk.
2. Teach Your Children how to wear and remove their clothes on their own without the help of another person, the same thing with shoes. I can proudly tell you that my one year and six months son can wear himself shirt and pants.
3. As they learn to read their books, at home, teach them how to read their bible verses and understand what each verse is saying to him or her.
4. Give them access to the kitchen to learn how to cook, how to pound pepper, cut onions, pill yam, potatoes, filter crayfish and even how to slice tomatoes. It is not something you will teach in one day; that is why you should allow them to come over to the kitchen to see you do it and also practice it there.
5. Teach them your culture and motherland language. Yes, it is very important for them to start learning your culture from childhood, especially if you and your family are staying in the city or overseas. This will help them that whenever they visit home for holidays, they will not find the environment difficult to adapt.
6. Teach them how to drink water; it should be known that walking around while drinking water or any liquid is not a good attitude.
7. Using teeth to trim finger nails is a dirty habit and should be seen as it is, and also let the child know the disadvantages attached to it.
8. Like my children, whenever they come back home from anywhere, either school or market, the first thing to do before touching anything is to wash their hands with soap. So teach them this too.
9. Let them know the danger of playing with electrical appliances such as electric iron, hot plate used in cooking, standing fan, etc. Putting a finger inside the lines of a standing fan can cost injury. Informing them of the danger can save their lives and also save you from the trauma you may go through if you did not guide them on time.
10. Teach them your family backgrounds and the origin of your village or town; they need to know who their family is not just the name.
11. Educate them how to speak with their siblings. You must train them to speak to each other with love, and honor, not minding who is the elder, let them know how to correct themselves and also how to apologize.
12. Teach them how to clean and rinse their mouth after eating.
Make it compulsory to teach them these things; you will be proud of them when they master it all; even their friends will be glad to emulate them.
